The father of O'Grady was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton located in Illinois and was graduated in 1981, with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. She appeared in a few commercials prior to shifting to Los Angeles in 1986. O'Grady's first job was modeling as a model for Montgomery Ward. She also appeared in several advertisements. She began her career on the screen with the romantic drama She's Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a prominent role as a recurring character in ABC comedy China Beach alongside Dana Delany. She also guest starred in a variety of other shows as well as appeared in made-for television and independent movies. Donna Abandando is her first role as a major role in ABC's NYPD Blue. Her role as the tall and blonde team secretary in the series from 1993 until 1996. In each of those years she won one of the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance by Drama Series. In 1995, O'Grady was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series along with the cast.
