O'Neil tried out for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. She was able to advance to the 100th round due to the fact that judges were awed by her vocal performance. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. She was however a complete loser in both the top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were surprised at her performance and suggested viewers choose contestants who sang well like Melissa. O'Neil, who had been always delivering top performances ever since, has never fell below the three top performers. After two more breathtaking performance on September 7 2005, when O'Neil and Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two contestants, judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspaper headlines were going to read O'Neil beat Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest champion in the show's record . O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
